The decentralization of knowledge, tools, and materials has caused a groundswell in the number of people who are doing their own hardware research and development in personal workshops, garages, and basements. This is far more widespread than at the beginning of the computer revolution, this is the unique hardware revolution. Those skills are being tested with the 2016 Hackaday Prize, a competition synonymous with creating for social change.
