The site was started in July after the website Plastic.com went down for unknown reasons, and appeared to be offline for good. Plastic had a reputation as an place that encouraged intelligent discussion without without namecalling or non-sequiturs, while avoiding stuffiness. Wanting to preserve the community, even if the site was now offline, a group of us chose to set up a new forum to continue the fun.
What makes TnT unique is that it's truly community-run. We'll soon be incorporating the site as a non-profit organization which anyone may join, run by a Board of Directors to which any member may apply. This way, we're guaranteed to remain open and responsive to the users of the site.
We chose Scoop because it's relatively easy to set up, and also easy to modify. Right now, we're at over 800 new lines of Perl and counting, plus Javascript and a complete overhaul of the page style sheets and text content. The stuff we've added that we haven't seen elsewhere includes:
- Personal Messaging
- A sidebar for users to submit "QuickLink" updates of a few sentences
- An enhancement of comment rating to include a one-word description along with a score
- RSS feeds for new comments within individual stories.
- Code modifications to let us have a class of permanent Editors that can promote fast-breaking stories quickly.
We're still a little small, but we hope to grow quickly now that we're settling on our final design and preparing to incorporate. So come check us out, and see if we can't irk you into posting a comment. |
