I had an argument with my friend Jame's girlfriend once about the "unaturalness" of female models and how they cause 12 year old girls to starve themselves to death. She was giving the tired old "unfair western standards of feminine beauty" bullshit in fashion magazines. I pointed out to her that if attracting men was the goal, why did women look at magazines run by gay men and their coke-addicted former models? Why not look at pornos instead? In a way, it would show men aren't so artificial, since what we care is about the girl underneath the clothes, right? Anyway, she retorted with the fake boobs body shaving rejoinder ,which I suppose had some merit. It just occured to me (of course months after the discussion), since models are often accused of self-starvation in the search of the perfect body, wouldn't it make sense to compare their rates of self starvation to those of female porn stars, where most men look for their idea of a perfect female body?

Now, I'm talking about the standard vanilla porn here. No weird German scheizer or BSDM or torture or foot fetish whatever crap. For example, do the women of porn studios such as Vivid and Hustler suffer high rates of anorexia similar to the models from Vogue? It would make sense that if "unfair standards of western beauty" gives us both Kate Moss and Jenna Jameson, both should have similar likelihoods of anorexia above that of the normal population.

Why do chicks continue to look at magazines featuring women who, while often (but not always) have attractive faces usually are rail skinny with none of the curves (note I said curves - not fat - it's not the same thing)? They seemed convinced that gay men can show them how to achieve the visual stimuli that they are usually completely unaffected by.

Women aren't using "women's magazines" to show them how to be sexually attractive to men. They are using them to show them how to achieve commodity status, how to conform, etc.  

Looking conventionally slim, etc if you're a woman is a bit like wearing a suit if you're a man.

North American women have learnt by junior high that for the most part a "slut" or "whore" is not someone held in high esteem by their society. Even if you look at vanilla porn a lot of the discourse  in it is about dirty cum sluts etc.

These days it seems to me that young women are tying to do everything at once - they buy all the stupid products to make them appear young/slim/successful, and then they go look at porn, read sex tips and consider anal bleaching as well.

once I read that models for swimsuits need to actually be heavier than runway models for clothing.

Plus a lot of sex appeal is simply external signs of reproductive ability (wide hips implies good sized birth canal, large breasts for feeding the babies), so a certian amount of body fat and a "curvaceous" body is attractive.

So I'd expec that people who model nude are actually closer to healthy weight than fashon models. But this is just a wild-assed guess.

in terms of body size. One of my favorites porn stars recently is wendy james, though I haven't seen her much lately. I think you can see for yourself she isn't anorexic.

because they have bad relationships with their fathers. That's it.

They see Daddy uninterested in Mommy cause she's a bossy 350 lb Bingo Jockey in sweat pants and they think, men want me to look like Paris Hilton. What they are really seeing is that Daddy wants Mommy to stop looking like a Beluga in velour.

And, of course, gay men understand this inately, since they experienced the same thing. Except, being men, THEY want to look like PAris Hilton, and cry over the lonliness of their fathers when they think of their fat Mommys.

Just like men don't perform stupid drunk antics or drive at breakneck speeds for women.

Oh, we might really believe, superficially, that we are, but we're not. We are all doing these things to impress our own sex, not the other one. How many pretty girls do you know who are obsessed with their perceived fatness, even while their bewildered boyfriends tell them, quite honestly and sincerely, that they aren't fat and don't need to lose weight? How many men ask their girlfriends or wives what sort of car is most impressive (and please spare me the shit about women not knowing cars, I'm talking image here, not engine size and fuel efficiency), rather than their male friends?

Now as for unreal standards of beauty (female beauty, of course), there's truth here. I can tell you for absolute fact that most models - actually nearly all, including the celebrities - get airbrushed to hell. Fashion and porn. When you realise that women do fashion and dieting for other women, but porn is for men, you understand exactly why you get curvy women on the top shelf and thinner women on the monthly glossies. Different audiences.
